Giant Letters

Gigantic letters

by Adrian

Today in the morning, we played a game called gigantic letters. We had to work in a team to make big letters with our bodies. Each group had 6 players. 3 teams were playing.  It was hard to make O, so that’s why my team lost that round. But it was easy to make A so my team won that round. It was fun. It was actually easy to play as well. I really liked playing this game so much!

Today in the first block, me and my class were practising a new game. It was about working together. We first read the instructions. Next we practiced how to play it. It actually turned out pretty good. After that we had a competition whose group could make a capital letter faster. The aim of the game is to try and be the first person to yell out the letter or the number. I  sort of didn't like it because some of the people did not apply to the other person's opinion but it was fun anyway!

Today in the morning, we learnt a new game! I was confused at first, but after a while, I started to understand it better! Rules were: go in teams of six and the teacher/caller says an alphabet, we had to lie down and make the alphabet with your group. Sometimes people forgot about he important word ‘’Teamwork.’’ I was starting to get really disappointed and mad! It was also itchy and stinky! I really didn’t want to lie down on the grass, but I didn’t have any choice but to do it. I also heard some gossip about the game, one was: “ Why do we have to play the game on grass, it stinks!” Then I realised I wasn’t the only one who didn’t like playing it very much. At the end, Ms Elena called our class to the mat, Ms Elena asked us a question and she said “Thumbs up if you liked the game so much!” I saw about 3 or 4 thumbs up. Then Ms Elena said “Do your thumbs halfway if you didn’t enjoy it but it was an okay game.” I saw 10 or 13 fingers up. Lastly Ms Elena said, “Thumbs down if it wasn’t successful.’’ Tons of hands went down, I was so shocked!! Well, that was the end of the game. We all had opinions about the game and others had fun!

Our Individual Pepeha

After our trip to Mt Taylor, Taurere, we created our personal PEPEHA!

Pepeha is a way to introduce ourselves in Te Reo Maori. It tells people who you are by sharing your connections with the people and places that are important to you.

Some of us decided to share our pepeha with you!

"Water Skills for Life" Lesson with Moe from Swimming New Zealand

Today we had a great opportunity to learn some water skills for life with Moe - a WSFL educator.

We had a lot of fun and learnt some essential water skills to properly behave in the water and how to save people if they're in trouble:

  • If you see someone in the water in trouble, don’t go into the water yourself but look for an adult to help.
  • If you ring 111, explain what’s happened and where the problem is.
  • You can help people float by throwing them anything that floats - like life jackets, boards, plastic milk bottles, buckets etc.
  • Ropes can help pull people out of the water. Coil the rope, then throw it underarm, to the person in the water. Make sure you hold onto one end.
  • When using a life jacket, put the jacket on and zip it up. Keep the life jacket on until you get out of the water.
Pool safety:
  • Hop into the pool safely.
  • Stay in the shallows where you feel safe.
  • Respect personal space.
Thank you, Mr Victor, for your support today!

Understanding the Treaty of Waitangi through a Role Play

To understand the history of the Treaty of Waitangi and its importance, we played a Game of Land Trading.

First, we created our Wonderlands. Then we were forced to trade our resources for guns, tools and other things. During this game of trading, we experienced frustration, anger, unfairness and many other emotions when our wonderful islands were torn apart and we lost our favourite places.

Sadaw said that the rules were heart-breaking ... Here is her recount:

Last week, Room 9 played a game of land trade. Ms Elena wanted us to feel like Maori people felt before 1840 when the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. When we started I felt happy to draw, but when we finished drawing… Ms Elena called us down to the mat. Our whole class wondered why she called us. I thought it was to show off our fantasy island, but instead… the British were going to trade unfairly! Ms Elena explained to us the rules. The rules were heart-breaking…. We couldn’t do anything but trade our land and resources. I saw other people screaming and yelling, “DON’T TAKE OUR LAND, WE’LL DO ANYTHING, JUST PLEASE DON’T!” But I saw the ‘British’ take their land. At the beginning, I was laughing that they didn’t take our land. When some British approached, I thought they were going to someone’s else’s land, but instead… they came to us! They took our Ice-cream mountains. I was still happy because they didn’t take my favourite part of our island!

Later on, when the game was finished, we felt frustrated. Our land was more like a small dot! When I looked at the other islands, they were much unluckier. My friends lost a lot of their land.

Now when I know what happened to Maori people and their land, I’m happy that it didn’t happen to me!

The Marshmallow Challenge 2021

Welcome to Room 9 2021! Today, we were excited to come to school to meet our friends, share our holiday experiences and have fun learning!

During our first team bonding activity, we understood the importance of teamwork and critical thinking. It was great to work with our friends!

All our marshmallow towers looked different but we were definitely successful in working together, listening to each other, trying new things, taking risks, making mistakes, persevering and not giving up.

Ka Pai, Room 9! All of us are the WINNERS!!!
